Current draft for Utah Wilderness Proposal BLM. Thank you!

### What is the dataset?

Established in 1964, the National Wilderness Preservation System allows for the protection and preservation of designated natural areas throughout the United States. This dataset contains polygons representing areas in Utah that were considered for official wilderness designation during a 1995 inventory of Utah's public lands. You can learn more about wilderness areas through [resources from the Bureau of Land Management](Each polygon in this dataset indicates the geographic extent of a wilderness area in Utah. Features in this dataset include the name, administrator, and area in acres.) (BLM).

Maybe instead...

Each polygon in this dataset indicates the geographic extent of a proposed wilderness area in Utah. Features in this dataset include the BLM unit, name, and area in acres.

<!--- There's also a field "is_this_state" that is marked either Y or left blank. Do we know what this indicates? --->

This might refer to the trust lands

The BLM developed these areas by selecting areas from their earlier dataset of [BLM Wilderness Study Areas](https://gis.utah.gov/products/sgid/boundaries/blm-wilderness-study-areas/). The resulting BLM Proposed Action was documented in the [Utah BLM Statewide Wilderness Final Environmental Impact Statement](https://archive.org/details/utahblmstatewide3bunit) (1990). The automated data were received from the BLM and updated by UGRC with the State of Utah Trust Lands delineated, as they existed in 1995.

<!--- The original metadata somewhat contradicted itself. In some places it said that the Trust Lands had been excluded from this dataset, in other places it said it did include the Trust Lands. Do we know which is correct? --->

Do any trust lands in the current land ownership overlay on any of the proposed wilderness areas?

There is some overlap, though in many places only by the tiniest sliver. I'm not sure that's what the is_this_state field refers to. Most of the polygons with a Y value in that field don't actually seem to delineate a trust land--though perhaps that's because that area is no longer a trust land (the data were created in 1995 apparently). I'll just leave it as a caveat in the metadata.
