My stupid self spend a good amount of the day confused because I accidentally set a motor to static (probably scrolled over it). It kept me confused for a while, but I'd like to think I might have caught it sooner if the fields had visuals that were easy to identify. The motortune scan form can be especially long, so color formatting could be especially useful here. Perhaps it's useful in other fields as well.

I was going to say that I don't have a usecase in mind for static... that is true for motors, however for the spectrometer static (usually at 0 order) makes sense at times.
we could remove that feature for the motors, though... (then at least it would be notable that the scan was taking much longer/much shorter than expected as the ndim changes between "set" and "scan")
