Initial request

The Scripps Institute of Oceanography (based at the University of California, San Diego) provides observational radiosonde and ocean drifter data to a number of NWP centers and will soon be providing balloon-based radio occultation data as well. They initially requested to become an originating sub-center of NCEP, but we and they now feel it makes more sense for them to have their own originating center number going forward, which in turn will also allow them to define their own sub-centers.

Amendment details

COMMON CODE TABLE C–1: Identification of originating/generating centre
COMMON CODE TABLE C-11: Originating/generating centres

Code Meaning
183 Scripps Institute of Oceanography (UC San Diego - United States)

COMMON CODE TABLE C-12: Sub-centers of originating/generating centres defined in C-1 or C-11

Originating Center Code Originating Center Meaning Sub-center code Sub-center meaning
183 Scripps Institute of Oceanography (UC San Diego - United States) 1 Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes

Requestor(s)

This request is a by-product from separate ongoing discussions regarding a potential new BUFR template (still TBD) for radio occultation (RO) data. The new template would be applicable for RO data observed from several different types of platforms, including satellites, aircraft, or ground-launched balloons. These discussions have included the following individuals:

  • Jeff Ator (NOAA/NWS)
  • Hui Shao (UCAR)
  • Simon Elliott (EUMETSAT)
  • Antoine Merle (EUMETSAT)
  • Christian Marquardt (EUMETSAT)
  • Harald Anlauf (DWD)
  • Stig Syndergaard (Danish Met Institute)
  • Neill Bowler (UK Met Office)
  • Jennifer Haase (Scripps Institute of Oceanography)
  • Anna Wilson (Scripps Institute of Oceanography)
