Fresh builds on ubuntu 24.04 running with mpich 4.2.0 do not run correctly in parallel, but instead create N independent serial jobs.

Temporary fix in place: bring full support for openmpi and move to openmpi as default for Ubuntu 24.04.

Will revisit once the ubuntu24.04/mpich issue is resolved.
