How to append content to an already existing Item report section ?

In nodes.py file we have this method in Item class

    def add_report_section(self, when: str, key: str, content: str) -> None:

But this method adds a whole new report section to the item.

What I am trying to do, is to append content to an already existing Item report section.

How to achieve that?

In order to avoid the xy problem please outline the actual usecase

I want to append information to the stderr section of the Item report.
This happens in the conftest.py file, when the report is being created in the pytest_runtest_makereport method.
The print("xxx", file=sys.stderr) cannot accomplish that.
That's why I need to append the information directly in the Item report, taking care of not deleting/overriding the already present content in the stderr section of the item.

That's a very specific implementation intent
