Spam issues

I have recently enabled Spamassesin but having problems with their filter. Its too aggressive and moves the following false possitives into the SPAM folder:

• emails from valid users of our own domain (why would these ever end up in spam??)
• emails from senders I have already been exchanging emails for 2 months
  I am also surprised that the false positives end up in the Spam folder and not in "Inbox"

these are my compose settings
- ENABLE_SPAMASSASSIN=0 - ENABLE_SPAMASSASSIN_KAM=0 - SPAMASSASSIN_SPAM_TO_INBOX=1

@casperklein might be able to assist with why that might happen, he uses SpamAssassin I think.

I have noticed that since DMS v14 the SpamAssassin results appear to be different, but it's unclear why (doesn't appear to be a change from us AFAIK, but in updated software).

You could try switching over to Rspamd? It would be great feedback to know if it handles this better for you as we want to switch to Rspamd as default in future, just need to ensure it's as good or better of an experience.

Ok. Will Def try Rspamd. I think from a user experience it would be helpful if we had a spam solution where an end user can feedback into the learning engine. That can probably only work via the mail client. I use Roundcube, Rainloop, Thunderbird and Outlook. Not sure if any of those would work with the DMS spam packages. Am so happy to use other mail clients if you have recommendations.

I don't have much involvement with anti-spam services in the project, you can try creating a new discussion that asks about that and someone from the community might eventually chime in with an answer.

I'd be surprised if it weren't something Rspamd supported, you'd just need to identify that feature in their docs and then how to have your mail client integrate with it, or if DMS needs to add some support to help facilitate that.

I use SA, but I don’t have much experience with it, apart from enabling it 😆 I can't help here.

Our legacy set of software (that Rspamd can replace entirely) has a lot going on beyond just what we configure, it's harder to track releases of each being compatible with each other, changelogs aren't always sufficient, docs for each vary in quality but often they're quite unpleasant vs Rspamd.

Bug reports is likewise difficult as most of these projects lack modern dev infrastructure such that you may be expected to engage via mailing list, whereas Rspamd we have the convenience of Github (this has various perks in comparison).

I don't think we have anyone interested in providing support for the legacy stack, and I know I may be one of the only maintainers to really dig into these various softwares docs/source to troubleshoot some issues. Thus I think we can look at DMS v16 switching to Rspamd.

I assumed you had a more extensive custom SA config. Do you have anything against trying Rspamd from DMS v15? It'd be good to know if it underperforms from your SA experience. It's possible for Rspamd to integrate with SA if necessary, I assume you aren't too bothered about all the other services Rspamd replaces so it'd be good if we can get you comfortable with Rspamd vs SA 💪 (if there are scenarios where SA is more useful and the Rspamd integration for it resolves that, we'd also be able to just offer that instead of Amavis + SA).
