"brew install <formula>" fails: fatal: not in a git directory #3315

I am trying to brew install a small executable called "ets". The default install is version 0.1 of ets which is out of date. I have manually edited the ets formula ".rb" file with URL and SHA of the latest version of ets but it fails. I have tried a number of permutations but always get this:

I'm totally lost. I can't figure out what thing or file is "not in a git directory". The source code was found and downloaded. So, what more is needed ? Does the developer have to upload something so Homebrew can find it ?

Thank you for that suggestion. I ran those three commands. The results were interesting. In particular, "brew config" reports "Rosetta 2: false". Rosetta 2 is installed on my Mac so, I don't know why Brew would says "false".

"brew doctor" suggested running "brew link ets" which I did. But that didn't solve my problem. Anyway, here are the results:

"brew config" reports "Rosetta 2: false". Rosetta 2 is installed on my Mac so, I don't know why Brew would says "false".

brew config is saying you're not running Homebrew under Rosetta, not that Rosetta isn't installed.

The problem you're having is this:

% brew config

Core tap last commit: never
Core tap branch: (none)

The Homebrew code and core taps are all supposed to be managed by Git, but the above output says Git doesn't even recognize these directories. Did you copy these directories over from another machine or a backup? If so, you likely forgot to copy over the .git and other dot-subdirectories in those directories.

Probably the best thing to do right now is to run the Homebrew installer again.

Not without understanding what it does. From the git-config man page:

safe.directory

These config entries specify Git-tracked directories that are considered safe even if they are owned by someone other than the current user. By default, Git will refuse to even parse a Git config of a repository owned by someone else, let alone run its hooks, and this config setting allows users to specify exceptions, e.g. for intentionally shared repositories (see the --shared option in git-init(1)).

If you're allowed to manage Homebrew, why aren't the Homebrew repos owned by you? As the Homebrew FAQ says:

If you need to run Homebrew in a multi-user environment, consider creating a separate user account specifically for use of Homebrew.

instead of making Homebrew repos accessible by everyone and their dog.

No. I followed what I thought was the way to install Homebrew (from "https://brew.sh"):

I did that using an Admin account as only admins have sudo access.

As you suggested, I've re-run the Homebrew installer. Of note, it said:

Ah hah ! Think I found the problem.

The "remote add origin" command failed with this error:

fatal: unsafe repository ('/opt/homebrew' is owned by someone else)

I had to install Homebrew using an Admin account (because user accounts are not in the sudo list). But, that made the admin account owner of the opt/homebrew/ folder. So, I changed the owner to my user account (and applied that change to all contents of opt/Homebrew). Then I re-ran my original attempt to install ets:

 % brew install ets                                                         
Running `brew update --auto-update`...

The correct ownership of /opt/homebrew is exactly the user who installed it. That's why the Homebrew FAQ says:

If you need to run Homebrew in a multi-user environment, consider creating a separate user account specifically for use of Homebrew.

But, ideally, every Mac should have at least 2 user accounts: one admin and one standard. That way, the admin account can be kept for security-sensitive work. I have a second standard account on my Mac for development work.

There's always a risk when installing new software, but Homebrew takes great care to limit the things it can do on your system (sandboxing installs, banning sudo usage except for specific commands, etc.), so the risk of using Homebrew itself in an admin account is minimal.
