Original Win XP Icons #3
Comments
I know what you mean. The problem is that making an icon theme is several orders of magnitude more work than the rest of the theme combined. I actually tried making the icon part when I was initially developing the rest of the theme. It turns out its really easy to basically rip all the icons out of XP's DLL files; the problem is that the max resolution is only 48x48. Also, Cinnamon itself has waaaay more functionality than XP, so most of the analogous icons for Cinnamon don't even exist in XP. Not saying these are impossible to overcome, but it will take time and creativity. Since you asked I can look into it. It kinda upsets me that I "almost" have a complete XP look-alike. I'm aware of YlmfOS which has some 128x128 icons that I can salvage |
@srueegger: What's wrong with the YlmfOS icons (http://www.noobslab.com/2014/05/recall-old-memories-of-xp-with-ylmfos.html)? Here a comparison screenshot from my pc: |
I love this original 'XP' style Nostalgic theme layout you present. It breaks some ice with Linux, and gets the serious IT oldies wiping tears away... Yes, I promote what CinnXP brings to the Linux GUI (and I do use the theme). And thanks to @petrucci4prez for the means to revive a visual desktop comfort zone for us 'ancient' oldies - who grew up with zero GUI's and just a command console on a dumb terminal (via Unix) :) |
@petrucci4prez As you have written above, there are many icons missing in XP cause cinnamon has more functionality. For example: gedit has two buttons "search" and "search and replace". YlmfOS uses for both the same icon. But I would like to help, if it's in my power. I use the YlmfOS icons and liked to tweak them little bit some months ago. I found it a little bit difficult to change the tray icons, i.e. WLAN, mintUpdate, bluetooth, etc. icons on the right corner of the panel. But i got some of them to work. Maybe you like following idea of mine: If you are starting the CinnXP icon project here on github, i would like to follow (and maybe even contribute to). So please let me know, when you open a branch for this project. |
haven't been able to look much into the icon themes yet, focusing on upgrading to gtk3.20 and cinn3 first. Definitely won't be starting from scratch so will probably use YlmfOS as starting point; will also keep some of your above ideas in mind. Also, Win7 and Vista have a few icons that could pass as XP icons stylistically, so might use that to fill in the gaps |
@petrucci4prez hi there, I'm very interested in your XP look-alike pack. If you need help with icons, I can give you a hand, have been maintaining the windows 10 Icon pack for a couple of months now |
would appreciate the help. I have a decent chunk of the icon portion started already...I'll make a branch soon |
@guys Secondly, I know a place where you can get bigger XP Icon remakes, one source would be DeviantArt which I found to have bigger Security Center icons, etc and the Windows XP Skin Pack for Windows Vista-10 has lots of bigger remakes of XP's icons inside of it (https://skinpacks.com/download/windows-7/xp-skin-pack/ (Password: "skinpacks.com")) but the only problem is that you would need a program for Windows known as "Resource Hacker" to access the (.res) files containing the icons themselves and then from there, you can batch save "Icon Group" resources to an (.rc) file (which actually saves the icons in seperate (.ico) with all sizes in each icon) and then extract the icons out of those files... Don't worry, it works VERY fine running on just WINE on Linux so you don't need a Windows PC in order for the program to work correctly... So yeah, those sources might prove useful for the icon set, also, I tried using YlmfOS Icons in my own distribution feren OS (Elbullazul knows what it is) and even then it looked like chaos so that's how I know YlmfOS is no longer compatible with GTK3... |
Any progress with the icon set?? |
sorry, life is busy, new branch created |
@petrucci4prez Here are some missing icons I noticed since using this pack.
(2) Right Click on a ZIP-file, there is a missing icon for "Extract Here" Also I noticed, that if I compile your icons and move the compiled folders or rename the folder, all symlinks break. Suggestions for mintUpdate icons: |

@petrucci4prez Any news on the icons? |
Sorry, progress will be slow for the next few months. Immunology is consuming my life at the moment :( |
@petrucci4prez @feren I think we can save the Ylmfos icon pack. If we get the icon pack from here : http://www.noobslab.com/2014/05/recall-old-memories-of-xp-with-ylmfos.html

I think it should work with the latest GTK |
@Elbullazul Tried it, doesn't change a single thing |
@srueegger @petrucci4prez Update: The Icon Set YlmfOS HAS BEEN FIXED by @Elbullazul right now... |
Shall we close this issue now there's an icon set to go with CinnXP? |
Well, everyone says it... |
@petrucci4prez Now there's an icon set by Elbullazul, shall this be closed? |
