Repro Steps

create a linux server and samba shares in LAN with WSL node, make sure shares are accessable from WSL node and WSL.
on WSL node, with the windows file explorer, copy a file from share A to share B, the IO will only perform on samba host.
on WSL, mount share A and share B, with an option -t drvfs , point to 2 folders in /mnt, copy files between them, you will see an IO though WSL.

Expected Behavior

should be no local IOs.

Actual Behavior

file is read from remote to local then write to remote.
