Mouse clicks do not work in F22 Lightning II but mouse movements (and everything else) work fine

I'm trying to play F22 Lightning II installed from myabandonware. I've tried both the iso installation media and the zipped game. I'm running archlinux, dosbox-x version: 2025.01.01, and swaywm. I suspected it might be sway so I tried it on x11 kde as well and the behavior is exactly the same.

No matter what I have tried, which at this point is basically every option in dosbox-x.reference.full.conf that has the word "mouse" in it, the mouse moves, with the in game mouse cursor so the game does appear to be receiving movements, but I can't click on anything. I've even tried binding keyboard actions to the mouse buttons using the mapper and then pressing those buttons but that doesn't work either.

I have not found any reports of similar issues like this. Some people say the mouse doesn't work at all, or has inverted movements or something, but not like this.

The game plays just fine, in fact very well, however because some menus are inaccessible using tab and the arrow keys I can't do some things like bind joystick controls, so it's not really ideal.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

So I had to put my brain in 1996 UI mode. Apparently in this game the initial menus here can not be clicked with the mouse, you have to use the arrow keys:

But the options in these submenus CAN be clicked with the mouse:

Except for the bottom two buttons which you have to use the arrow keys up and down to select. I initially only tried to click the buttons and thought the mouse wasn't working, but it appears this is the way the ui was designed. So everything is working well.
