Can I modify font sizes when converting markdown to epub?

I am converting a markdown file to epub and using Lua filters and css to style the result. I have tried using font-size to modify specific paragraphs and elements; the result works correctly when converting to html, but in epub format there is no effect. Is it possible to achieve this with pandoc?

I would put the sections that you want in a different font size in a fenced div with a class, e.g.

::: {.myclass}
this is text
:::

and then add to your epub CSS something like

.myclass { font-size: 82% }

I found out that certain ebook readers don't support CSS fully; my approach works on Calibre but not on Alexandria for example.
