With the withdrawal of the Create3 product, this idea is now moot. Sad, because the iRobot Create3 was the absolute best educational robot on the market, with the best documentation, best support team, and the only educational robot offering bumpers, obstacle sensors, an optical flow sensor, and self-docking! Wishing the best @alsora and @brianabouchard - you all are really great. |

The Create3 is currently the best educational robot having ROS 2 support. It combines self-protection sensors with excellent odometry (fused IMU, Encoder, and optical mouse), versatile power supply, unique in the market self docking, robot simulation, a user discussion forum monitored by vendor developers, excellent documentation/examples, and all this at a reasonable price point.
Issues:
Proposed Solution: Add Ethernet-Over-USB to Create3 "Bluetooth Mode" Python API
If and when iRobot will be looking for cost cutting, and perhaps eyeball cancelling the ROS 2 Create3 product, turning the responsibility for maintaining the Create3 "ROS 2 Mode" to the user community would be possible by moving the Create3 ROS 2 Node out of the physical Create3. This would allow the Create3 to be used in future ROS 2 versions without any further iRobot investment.
This single change might also influence additional sales to the ROS community knowing their purchase is not facing future obsolescence with no workaround.
