This would be a cool addon. Imagine having a printer powered by a switchable outlet, only turning the printer on when there's a job in the cups printing queue waiting :)

I've searched the net for days, bumping in dead ends like this thread until I've stumbled upon the following, so I'll share it for those who are interested.
It works for me, just tested it out. Unofficial so use at own risk.

I had to go to the page at port 631 of my Home Assistant server because Ingress page isn't working well.

I can second that. In my case I suspect a conflict with the already running nginx add-on.
After disabling SSL in the configuration, it works both in the integration and with "http://homeassistant.local:631". The latter is a bit unsafe, though, but I can live with that until someone posts a solution to the "Bad Gateway" issue.

CAVEAT: Some printing services (e.g. newer Android) require SSL, so a solution to this issue would be desirable.
Ironically, though, Windows 10 still can connect via HTTP only as it seems (source).

No time to shoot screens atm, but it is pretty simple:

1. Go to Settings --> Add-ons --> "CUPS print server" and there to "Configuration".
2. The very first settings is the "SSL" switch; turn it off.
3. A little further down, press the "Save" button and then "Restart" in the following dialog.
4. After a few seconds, open http://homeassistant.local:631/ (or use HA's IP address)

There was no driver for my printer as well, but printers mostly work on the same basis, so as long as it is pretty much the same kind, it's okay. I'm using an L310 driver for my Epson L3211.

Actually, I can see a driver in the list for your one. Scroll to the middle of the list, and there are several ones for the Laserjet 1020. There is one with "recommended" next to it, my guess it it will work. The "requires proprietary plugin" ones won't work I guess.
But even if the "recommended" one doesn't work for some reason, you can try the "Laserjet 1010 - CUPS+Gutenprint" one. I'm using a Gutenprint driver, and it works.

If you'd like to use it from a Windows machine, when you add a network printer use the link to the printer's CUPS page.
For example for my printer it is:
"http://homeassistant.local:631/printers/EPSON_L3211"

Then when it asks for driver I'm not sure it should be the driver for the actual printer as it is a CUPS network shared printer, so I just selected the "Microsoft PS Class" driver.

@Hubberthus I used that same driver for my L3210. DO you have more details in HA Sensor for this printer or only current status? Could we check ink level?

It's been a while when I used this. Bought a wifi printer 2 years ago and all this became obsolete for me instantly.
But my guess is that the interface towards the printer is very limitied with this addon, so you most propably won't be able to check the ink levels.

You could maybe use https://www.debugpoint.com/printer-ink-levels-linux/ and then have a script run that extracts the ink levels to home assistant.

Ah, I see.
If you mean the very first step with the radio buttons, I guess you should select "HP Printer (HPLIP)" in the "Local Printers" section.
After that page, that's a tricky question...
I've googled around, and maybe if you use the "socket://homeassistant.local:9100" or "socket://localhost:9100" on the next page it could work. Apparently HP printers tend to use this.

(The best way would be to run the "hp-toolbox" command to set up the printer automatically for CUPS, but the problem with this is that the addon runs in a separate docker, so you can't just do that. This whole CUPS thing is basically best when run on a Unix machine directly, and not as a Home Assistant plugin. I hope the "socket://..." will work for you)

how did you get password for user "print"? (I had to enter to the container and reset it)
where you able access /admin page with out changes in "location" section in cupsd.conf? (I had to change @Local to "all")
if you add printer does it survive the HA reboot? I see there is not persistent config :(

I am using HA OS.
