My guess is that ghostty +show-config loads the entire configuration then only shows configuration options which differ from their defaults; note that cursor-style = block is the default.

I'm 90% certain that your issue is the following, quoted in verbatim from the documentation for the aformentioned option:

Note that shell integration will automatically set the cursor to a bar at a prompt, regardless of this configuration. You can disable that behavior by specifying shell-integration-features = no-cursor or disabling shell integration entirely.

As far as I'm aware, that shell integration feature exists to get a bar cursor in Vi insert mode, a block cursor in Vi normal and visual modes, and an underline cursor in Vi replace mode. Of course, to people who don't use Vi mode in their shell, and to Vi mode users who like their cursor nice and blockey, it will appear as if the cursor style is being overridden.

Is my actual issue that my shell tells the terminal to be a bar? (I use bash and with the default (emacs) mode)

Kind of—the shell integration injects some code into the shell; one of those pieces of code makes the shell tell Ghostty to make the cursor a bar. So I guess Ghostty tells itself to make the cursor a bar by using Bash.

Yeah it could, and shell-integration-features = no-cursor currently tells the shell integration script to skip injecting that part.

I've now on switched to a3e462b (the latest commit on main, version 1.1.1) and this issue is fixed. The version I was using was v1.1.0.
