What is specific to GeoServer in this application

Since its monitoring OGC WMS services, shouldn't it work against any WMS implementation (MapServer, Deegree, ESRI...)?

Is there something specific about GeoServer? (oops, it just occurred to me you might be using the Geoserver API...)

Actually no, nothing specific to GeoServer. Since it mimics a WMS request it could use an ArcGIS Server host (though we have only tested it against GeoServer). We are intentionally not using the GeoServer API so that we can better emulate client behavior.
