How to correctly add type definitions for image imports in gatsby?

I've created a file under "src/images.d.ts" with the following content:

declare module '*.jpg';
declare module '*.png';

And then i try to import an image in a component:

import Avatar from '../../images/image.jpg';

then i get an error: Cannot find module '../../images/image.jpg' or its corresponding type declarations.ts(2307)
