Erroneous CPU temperature display #380
Comments
By using a multimeter with a thermocouple directly touching the Gekko package. |
Complementary PVR and ECID data would be useful. |
I once damaged thermal pads trying to pull the radiator off the Main Board, and would prefer not to have to risk it on my other consoles, plus, I don't have suitable gear to get accurate temperature. Here are the numbers, to begin, they are tab-separated, for copy-paste to a calc sheet. Black PVR 00083214 ECID 0D964300:0480C886:BE9EB048:FE1A3A08 |
They are "real world ones", but IBM says it can be off by -20°C to +10°C due to production variances. |
Wow! And I felt concerned about accuracy… So let's go for a -20°C offset, and hope variances are just a few and happen by huge batches, so that it can be applied until/from a production date. |
You mean +20°C, which it already is. |
So the cubes that I have that seems off aren't, as there is a +20°C offset that is applied, based on the ones you had tested to calibrate the temp display at first? |
Same here, just picobooted a black dol 001, replacing all pads with new ones, cold boot indicates 54C, it goes above 60 after gaming for a while, yet the air pushed by the fan isn't that hot, and feels similar to an unmodded cube to the touch. Planning to do the same to a purple one tomorrow, will see how much of a difference it has. Granted I used a fairly cheap brand on the CPU as I couldn't find 2mm arctic pads, and other known brands at 2mm are ridiculously expensive. Might bite the bullet and go thermalright or gelid later if it turns out the cheap pad is really bad and sensor is right. |
Please provide your PVR and ECID. |
There you go. PVR: 00083214 Room temperature was 28C (probably less, thermometer is higher than the console), and the cold boot I just performed to get this information showed 46C in Swiss. We do seem to be looking at the 20C difference you mentioned. |
As of brand new SWISS release 1362, room temperature 24°C, started up as fast as I can with WWH, so there's the chart, coma separated as tab are truncated from the posts: Alucryd,Black NTSC? 001,PVR 00083214,ECID 0D960100:1040C34C:9494F0C0:FE143CF3,28/46 |

Interestingly, both went up to 30°C while I was noting down the PVR & ECID and stayed there... |

NTSC Revision 1.1 Purple New thermalpad and Fan |
I've got: The display in Swiss always says 2°C and does not change. I assume this is either a software bug or just a faulty temperature sensor. |
Adding my data to the fire:
|
Black Gamecube: Coolboot: 36-38º Swiss 0.6, Commit d2874eb Revision 1527 |
From shelf temperature (room temperature is 26°) to SWISS display (powered from~1min) both show:
Black DOL-001 34° seems OK
Indigo DOL-001 54° Off by around 20° (if we consider the black as OK)
Silver DOL-101 58° Off by the same amount as the Indigo (a little offset may be due to damaged thermal pads)
All in the EUR-PAL flavour.
How can we help identify the different range thermal probes?
