Story

As the accessibility pod,
We want to clarify the behavior of the left navigation when the page is zoomed to 200%,
So that we can ensure compliance while avoiding unnecessary development changes that do not impact usability.

Issue Summary:
The Trusted Tester identified an accessibility issue where the left navigation disappears when the page is zoomed to 200%. However, further investigation with the development team revealed that:

  1. The links that are present in the Left Navigation are the exact links that are listed on the Home page link.
  2. The left navigation is still available; it simply requires one additional click to access.
  3. Zooming to 200% is functionally equivalent to a mobile view due to responsive design behavior, meaning that this issue is not unique to zoom but rather an expected adjustment for smaller screen sizes.
  4. The page does not prevent navigation; it merely requires an additional interaction to access the menu, which remains functional via both mouse and keyboard.

Along with a Mitigation Statement to be executed by @PaulKuykendall , the dev team will also complete a quick win fix that will address this issue by enhancing the breadcrumbs for improved navigation clarity.

Acceptance Criteria

  • Create a Mitigation Statement to submit to the Trusted Tester
  • Breadcrumbs are updated to improve visibility and clarity of navigation paths ( Home > Analytics Dashboard).
  • The links in the left navigation remains accessible via an intuitive interaction (i.e., clicking the menu toggle).
  • No loss of navigability or functionality for keyboard users.
  • Trusted Tester review acknowledges the mitigations and determines whether the issue remains critical.

Just tagged @PaulKuykendall in slack to let him know that the proposed fix is complete and we are ready to submit a Mitigation Statement to the Trusted Tester.

I spoke with our trusted tester, Aaron, who assures me that this solution would definitely be acceptable and compliant.

His exact words were "If the drop-down menu is available when zooming to 200%, and the user can open the left navigation from there, then this would meet the 508 compliance requirements."
