Create a standard for game abbreviations #78

Generally, the host OS or platform is indicated by prefixes and suffixes
#### Prefixes
* MCC- ;
* MCC-PC- ;
* MCC-X1- ;
#### Suffixes
* X360; e.g. H3X360, CEAX360. Established, but rarely used in combination
with a game name.
* 360 ; same as previous, but shorter.
* A ; e.g. CEA, H2A. Very common.
#### Miscellaneous
* H:O ; self-explanatory. Differs from ED.
* H3:ODST ;
* HPC ; colloquially refers to the three Gearbox releases, sometimes
used to refer to Retail Edition, specifically. Clarification needed.
* H2X, H2V, H2PC, H2A. The third may be construed with the platform if the
recipient is not familiar with Project Cartographer. Additional
clarification needed for H2A-X1 and H2A-PC.

I've excluded the Edition suffix in abbreviations so it's easier to differ
from "Combat Evolved" abbreviations, but this also leaves more up to
interpretation. I'm fond of HTE and HRE, so HCE's unfortunate position is
just that.
Now the question is, “Which naming convention should we use?”
* Trial Edition, Retail Edition, Custom Edition. Other info is inferred.
Easy to understand and somewhat already in circulation.
* HTE, HRE, HCE. Okay, but the last one can be confusing.
* TrE, ReE, CuE. Stupid and hasn't been established.
* HCET, HCER, HCEC. The base game is more clear, but the branch/version is
not. Not yet established.
* HCETE, HCERE, HCECE. Same as previous, but worse.
#### Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary

For Halo 2, H2X and H2V are predominantly established. H2A is an often-used
alias to MCC-H2A.
Halo 3, ODST, Reach, and 4 are all limited to their 360 and MCC releases.
The MCC prefix and the 360 suffix should suffice.
H5 is synonymous with H5:G.

I'm making the call that this is how we will do things for H1:
We will avoid "CEA" or other terms where "CE" stands for Combat Evolved. CE will only mean custom edition. |
why not H1MCC? H1MCC H1A i feel like should be its own designation, as the MCC version of the game is completely different from the standalone 360 game. |
H1A is the line of the engine that includes Saber tech. H1A is in MCC and represents the most current version of that line. Sure, there are some differences between H1A 360 and H1A MCC but I'm not really aware of anyone modding H1A 360, so for c20 I think it's fine to use H1A to mean H1A in MCC by default. Contrast this with H1X vs H1PC and H1CE where each has more to talk about. |
