How to know textbox is empty?

But I don't know the picker was clear, .viewDate still is user picked date

I should using .dates.lastPicked rather than .viewDate

There are events that you can listen to that will tell you the old and new dates selected

Yep, but I think not all people need to subscribe the events? (for example, just simple html form and ajax submit button, non-SPA)

I suggest we have some kind of .last or .last('update.dt') to get last event
