It looks like I need to update the surface dataset file for our site at Barro Colorado Island. I generated the following error when trying to build with ctsm5.3.008:
Opened existing file /home/*/Models/CTSM/cime/scripts/bci_0.1x0.1_bothmet_v7i.c210414/surfdata_bci_clm5.2.005_c240522.nc 207
Input surface dataset is: /home/*/Models/CTSM/cime/scripts/bci_0.1x0.1_bothmet_v7i.c210414/surfdata_bci_clm5.2.005_c240522.nc
This surface dataset is older and incompatible with this version of CTSM
Dataset version = 5.2 Version expected = 5.3
ERROR in /home/*/Models/CTSM/src/main/surfrdMod.F90 at line 183
Do we have documentation on the changes in the surface file? I can help update the warning so that the next user has a workflow to update their surface dataset.
Definition of done:
Add a note to the error message about using subset data for a single point or regional case and associated docs in the notes
Add a note to the error message for a global case about using mksrfdata_esmf and associated docs in the readme

Is BCI one of the 'supported' single point tests we're running, or would like to run? If so, maybe subsetting the surfaced data for BCI should be incorporated into workflows for doing the same with NEON and PLUMBER2 sites?
Ryan, in the near term, I'm assuming this can be achieved by running subset data for the lat-lon of BCI, unless there are other custom modifications that need to be made for the cases you're running?
